Why does updating Windows kill my internet connection?

I've had this problem pop up a few times now. I go to do some of the recommended or necessary Windows (7, in my case) updates, and after the reboot, my internet stops working. The network icon has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark on it. It knows there's a network but it won't connect. If I unplug and the replug the network cable, it recognizes that, but it still won't connect to the network.

I tried the built-in Windows troubleshooter and it can't figure out the problem. I can't figure it out either, but then network stuff is not my forte. I suppose there's probably some setting somewhere I need to check in such instances, but I don't know what that is.

So I'm appealing to the fine folks here for some ideas and suggestions. :)

It's been rather aggravating as it's hit or miss whether an update will kill the internet connection. When it does kill it I end up restoring a disk backup.
