Who was that historic fool?

I recall, years ago, an interview with one of my favorite comic book writers, and legendary kooks, Alan Moore. He was professing admiration of a long dead scientist who believed he had mastered some sort of magick that allowed him to see colorful balls of light in the darkness.

I then remembered, years later, reading a post by Randi (I think) that it was later discovered this poor fool was seeing a hallucination that was the result of having poisoned himself while studying certain chemicals, or radiation, or something like that. I think he may have died from it, but I'm not sure about that.

Anyone have a clue as to whom I'm referring? I can't figure out who it is now.
