Photon mass-energy

I know many of us non-physicists struggle with this, but please humour me.

Twice in the last few days I've heard a physicist answer the question about why photons move under gravity despite having rest mass = 0 by saying yes, but they have energy and it's mass-energy that interacts with spacetime. That's OK, but then I think "E= mc2" and c2 x 0 = 0, so why is E > 0.

Then my head hurts.
