I am having a discussion with some very tedious young earthers on another forum, and would like a bit of additional information on dating the planet, please. I told them the earth was 4.54 billion years old, plus/ minus 1%. Now, there is one old guy who is rather pleasant and polite, and has asked for further information on the dating techniques used to arrive at this figure, and I would like to be able show that there are multiple ways the figure has been calculated.
So, can anyone give me a list of all the ways that the earth has been dated, and what the differences are in any results from these different techniques, please. If there were corroboration from different fields of science, so that we don't have the old "well of course all the geologists would say that, wouldn't they" come-back, that would also be very useful. I'm afraid the level of ignorance they display is such that they all confuse C14 dating with radiometric, and mention of the latter seems to set off a small explosion in their brains because they confuse it with the former, which is the very favourite apparently.
