Wifi woes - hopefully with better clues

1. New desktop connected to wifi modem by ethernet cable at about 10" range. Works great. If I disconnect the cable and rely on wifi it also works great. No glitches.

2. New laptop arrived today and 'saw' the home wifi immediately, as have other mobile devices in the house. It works for about 1 operation (like bringing up the BBC website) then loses wifi connection and, over about 2-3 mins, recovers to 'limited access' to 'access'. After that it's rinse/repeat - you get one useful thing done. Other devices have had the same experience.

3. The range of the wifi modem to the new laptop is about 5m through nothing more than 2 thinnish layers of wooden floor. The laptop shows 4/5 bars reception.

4. When the laptop loses internet access, the desktop (on ethernet cable) also loses access exactly until the laptop regains access or the modem is reset.

5. The modem system log just says

8/12/2014 17:12:15> Last errorlog repeat 2 Times

8/12/2014 17:12:19> LLC 1483 unknow protocol

during these glitches.

6. Buggrit. I was hoping this might be "debugging by confession" and all would be well if *both* machines were using wifi, but no. This desktop is still fine on wifi but the laptop is up+down.

7. Who the hell is "stelios"? I'd have bet the cat that there was no wifi network in range at the fag-end of this sleepy Greek village, but stelios seems to have one :)
