Trying to sort wifi issues within Win8 on a new laptop was getting irritating as I didn't know my way around. I was planning to upgrade to 8.1 and install the 'Start button app" anyway, so thought I'd do that first then get back to my wifi issues.
No. Oh no. No diddly o.
The Win8 Store told me I was missing 98 Win8 updates (it took 20 minutes to count them, I swear), so I set them rolling. 2 hours later the progress bar was 1mm from completing when the laptop announced "Problems with updates" and seems to have lost whatever it had downloaded. Clicking some links I arrived at a 'Control panel' version of the update downloader but that ran for 40 mins and managed 0% complete.
Man, this is crap. In older versions I vaguely knew how to identify missing/failed updates and get them direct from the MS website, but when an unfamiliar and very different o/s fails what do you do?
I'm tempted to take this machine to the local shop and ask the nice guy to just wipe it and install Win7.
****. Just started the whole process from scratch and it's still looking for updates ... now found ... downloading ... see you in 2024 :D
