I have a nice fish fossil specimen from the Green River formation. It has two Knightia and three Diplomystus.
Unfortunately, I just wanted to touch it and and rub on a corner of the stone, but my hands were dirty. Now I have a grey smudge on the stone.
It is not where the fossils are. I tried just cleaning with some water. That helped some but the smudges are still visible.
How do I clean this? I don't want to use any soap or anything that might stain the porous stone. I can find videos on preparing pristine specimens, but I can't find anything on getting some greasy grime off the stone.
