Police officer claims he received vulgar message written on McDonalds coffee cup

I should have posted this when I first heard about it, because my alarm bells were ringing, but it's still under investigation.

Here's the story as I saw it yesterday via Fox News:

McDonald's coffee cup with vulgar message given to Kansas police officer: '******* pig'

A police officer received an insulting message along with a coffee from McDonald’s. A police chief from Kansas shared a photo of the coffee cup with a vulgar message written on the receipt. It reportedly was given to one of his officers who had ordered the drink. A photo showed the receipt stuck to the side of the cup with the words “F-----g pig” written across it. The incident occurred early on Saturday morning at a McDonald’s in Junction City, Kan., KWCH reported. The unnamed officer had stopped at the restaurant on the way to work to pick up the coffee. Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday shared an unedited version of the photo on Facebook, captioning it, “This is what he paid for. Although I understand this is likely the act of one person and not a representation of the company, when it was brought to their attention the company offered him a ‘free lunch.’ No thank you. A Big Mac and large fries doesn’t make up for it. The US Veteran who continues to serve deserves much more. This is not only bad for McDonald's, but is also a black eye for Junction City.”

So I went hmmm when I read that. Seems like a rather weak way to express one's hatred of police, and one likely to backfire. And this is national news? A police officer received a rude message written on a receipt by an employee of McDonalds? Really? Also, why is it that hate messages written on receipts always turn out to be fake? Curious.

So, update:

HERINGTON, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) – Authorities are investigating after a Kansas police officer said he received a cup of coffee over the weekend with an expletive written on it. Dana Cook, the owner of the McDonald’s in Junction City, said he has video showing it wasn’t one of his employees. “My McDonald’s (employees) have the utmost respect for all members of law enforcement and the military and were troubled by the accusation made,” he said. “We thoroughly reviewed our security video from every angle, which clearly shows the words were not written by one of our employees." Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday said he looked at the video on Monday. "Based on what I saw this morning in meeting with the McDonald's representatives, we are looking further into this matter," Hornaday said. A picture of the cup posted by the police chief on his personal Facebook page shows the words "(expletive) pig" written on the side.

So it's still under investigation, but if this is what it seems to be, why would a police officer do something so dumb?
To make a point about how bad police officers have it? To drum up sympathy for police and hatred for McDonalds?
It's not the first time a police officer reported a fake crime either (although this probably doesn't rise to the level of a crime).
