Toner cartridge woes

Good evening (at least, where I am it's good evening), dear virtual friends!

I am in a printer pickle, and the stakes are high! You see, it's not my printer. It's the printer at my work. Basics first: we are dealing with a Brother printer/copier, an HL-2280DW model. It says "wireless" on the top, but there appears to be a USB hookup between it and the computer as well. However, when I tried to "update the firmware" to solve the problem I'm having (prompted by Brother's internet FAQ after nothing else they suggested to try first worked), it said it couldn't find any USB connection. So I guess the printer is wireless after all? Of course, no one knows. The manager before me, for whom I took over the job, handled all this stuff, and she had to show me so much in such a short time when I was preparing to take over, certain things like this just got lost in the shuffle. Understandably. But consequently, I know nothing about the printer, or any computer-related stuff really, and yet everyone above me at work is now looking to me expecting me to fix it. I want to succeed, but I already tried all the website's troubleshooting tips to no avail.

Oh right, I guess I should explain the problem. Yesterday, the printer declared itself out of toner, and therefore went on strike. No problem, I thought. I have a brand new, in-the-box, sealed and wrapped cartridge, not a knock-off but legit from the Brother company, ready to go! So I got it, and just to make sure I did everything right, I followed the simple installation instructions on their website to a tee. All went well, everything popped right in where it was supposed to, but then when I closed it up again, the little screeen just continued to stay lit-up and read, "Out of toner - Replace toner cartridge, open front cover." Trying to start new print jobs does absolutely nothing. The jobs won't even queue up on the little print job screen icon like they usually do when there's a printer error. It's like the command just vanishes into quantum ether.

Having gotten nowhere with the official website's troubleshooting tips, I started googling for nerd-help forums. I found tons of people who were having/had had the same issue. Most of them were saying it was completely fixed by this process involving opening the front cover, pressing the "clear" button, then pressing the "start" button, then pushing the "up-arrow" key until the screen says the number 12, and then finally closing the face again and pressing OK. Dozens of people, super-nerds and ostensible Luddites like me, were swearing this fixed the problem for them on the first or second try. So hope began to blossom within me. It was quickly dashed. I've tried the process 10 times now. It's not doing anything. It brings up the 12 and all like it's supposed to, but then after I hit "OK," nothing happens. The nerds said it's supposed to say "Approved" on the screen once it works, and then the printer will go back to functioning normally. Well, that hasn't happened for me. Any suggestions? Anyone else had this or similar problem in the past, preferably someone who actually understands a bit of how all this stuff works and can explain it? I HAVE to get this printer working tonight... or else. ;)
