I don't know whether anyone's been following the political situation in the Philippines, but they've just elected a Trump-like blowhard to a six-year presidency.
The economy has been in the dirt for years and the country still feels the effects of the Marcos years, which led to the vacuum that President Duterte has stepped into.
The guy is a raving loony, but his anti-crime and anti-drug stance has hit a strong chord with Filipinos and they've given the bloke the keys to the treasury. His anti-crime gangs in Davao are legendary, having disposed of at least 1000 "criminals" under Duterte's mayoralty of the city.
I deal with a lot of Filipinos and I'm comforted by their view of Duterte - many of them see him as a saviour to the extent that they're happy to allow the human rights abuses in return for reduced crime.
I am therefore sure this will end well.
(Oh, and don't piss off anyone in Phils, if you happen to be over there.)
