The time has come for me to replace my work laptop (which will then become my personal laptop).
The current model is a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 with an Intel i5 M560 2.67 GHz processor, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD running Windows 10 Pro.
I've just looked up the order details and HOLY **** ! it's 5 1/2 years old (and cost £1,247.42).
I'm almost certain to replace it with another Lenovo Thinkpad but I'm a little surprised how little specs seem to have moved on in all that time.
My preferred model is the T460 with an Intel i7-6600U 3.4 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM and a 512GB which will come in at £1,300 my questions are:
- Is the i7 worth the extra £250 over the i5-6200U ?
- Do I need 16 GB memory (it's only an extra £50) ?
- Are there alternatives from other brands ?
The differences over the specs of my 5 year-old machine seem marginal. Is it even worth buying a new laptop given that I mostly use it for word processing and running remote sessions ?
