CSIRO and University of Tasmania scientists have managed to capture footage of Australia's second highest mountain, Mawson Peak on the Big Ben massif on Heard Island, as it erupted the other day (It's well taller than what most people think is Australias highest mountain, Kosciuszko, at 2745 metres. Kosciuszko is only 2228. Mount McClintock in Australian Antarctic Territory is actually our tallest if you count Antarctic claims, at 3492 metres. Otherwise it's Mawson Peak). It's one of only 2 active volcanoes on Australian Territory, plus the currently dormant East Australian Hotspot.
It is, I believe, the first time video footage of this mountain erupting has been filmed. It's a fairly active Volcano, having erupted 3 times in the last 5 years, but because it's on a subantarctic island at at 53 degrees south and halfway between Perth and Cape Town in the middle of the southern indian ocean near the Antarctic convergence, no one lives there and only a couple dozen people a year visit, so witnesses to its eruptions are very rare.
