This is a fascinating and disturbing case.
Basically, what seems to have happened is that a woman (de Freitas) and a man (Economou) met, then hooked up and had sex. A week or so later she accused him of rape.
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charge of rape as there was insufficient evidence. However, the accused man was not satisfied with this and brought a private prosecution against the woman for attempting to pervert the course of justice. The woman's family requested the Crown Prosecution Service to take over the private prosecution and drop it, but instead they took it over and continued it.
Three days before the trial was due to start, the woman committed suicide. In notes written to her parents she cited the stress of having to give evidence as the cause - it seems she was upset that evidence that she had worked as an escort would come out and embarrass her.
Now Economou has sued de Freitas's father for defamation due to his apparent continued naming of Economou as his daughter's rapist, and yesterday Economou was in turn charged with harassing de Freitas senior.
If these people weren't incredibly rich this would probably all be taking place on the Jeremy Kyle show, but as they are, it's playing out at the High Court.
