A NYC jury question...

I figure this is the most logical place for this question. Not a major conflict; just curious. I was reading an article on the Sefolosha case and they mentioned that the judge sent the jury home after they'd gone into deliberation.

Is this the common action, now? I sat on a much less significant jury than that one, and we were sequestered. The rule at the time was that once deliberations commenced, the only contact you were allowed was with the officers of the court. (And that's probably not the correct term... a lawyer is "an officer of the court", I believe. I mean the "guys/gals in uniforms who work for the courthouse")
