Here's a video of a college football player punching a woman (only the first 24 seconds matter):
Tight quarters. She threatens to punch, he restrains her. There's some kneeing. She takes a swing. He blasts her in the face.
A commenter there makes an interesting point. I can't locate it at the moment, but he said something to the effect that if the genders had been reversed, and a woman rocked a guy (after he swung first!) she would be celebrated by the media. This football player has been dismissed from the team and he's facing charges for battery.
I could see the hypothetical woman becoming a minor celebrity, making appearances on late night shows where she hilariously defends the hilariously timid host from would-be attackers in a hilarious sketch. Female violence is somehow "empowering."
Others are claiming she "deserved it" and equality means punches go both ways. Since he struck out of instinct/anger rather than self-defense -- she posed no real threat to him -- I'd say his actions were unjustifiable.
