If there's a thread on this, my apologies.
Comcast is turning your home router into a public Wi-Fi hotspot
So for a while now, I see "Xfinitywifi" showing up as an open wifi connection along with my wifi and my neighbor's that show up as connections (except my neighbor's connections are all password protected).
Then I see a growing outrage. They told customers they needed to upgrade modems or with a service upgrade supposedly our old modems might not work. Well I said screw that and didn't upgrade the modem. But people who did began to notice these new Xfinity hotspots and it leaked out they were using everyone's modems as wifi hotspots. I don't know if the hotspot is from my router or a neighbor's upgraded modem. I'm not sure how to tell.
So lately I began having trouble with my router not holding its connection. I traded it out for my older router and things worked for a while. But now it's happening again. Could be a coincidence but hopefully my router is not being mucked with.
Tonight instead of the usual wifi connection my computer latched on to the Xfinity link which popped up asking me to join their network. I directed my connection to my own network.
But this crap pisses me off. They're not just invading my privacy with any and everything I do online, and they didn't just eliminate my old TV's picture in a picture, now they want to hijack my router.

If you're a Comcast cable customer, your home's private Wi-Fi router is being turned into a public hotspot. It's potentially creepy and annoying. But the upside is Internet everywhere. |
