Protecting email addresses?

We all have instances when some company gets our email address because one business sold to another. But how does someone you knew years ago when you lived hundreds of miles away and have had no contact with since get your email address? There is just no connection. To clarify: I had a doctor when I lived at my previous address. I moved away and have a totally new email address. I've had no contact with her office and no one there knows where I am now. Yet, today, I received an email from a medical society of her state inviting me to save her as my physician.

How did this society, or maybe her office, get my current email address.

I can figure out how some outfits - Facebook, Twitter, even Linked in, get it but someone far away and no contact? Remember the White Pages? I begin to suspect we now have White Pages for email addresses.

Please educate me. Thanks.
