Bio-available iron

Every day something new comes up - a good reason for getting out of bed every morning? Today's Science Daily has an article about iron from melting ice sheets benefitting and aiding in development of phytoplanktons. From there, I am guessing, the food cycle continues upward to mammals - we hope?

All this set me to wondering about the scrap war machines that were dumped in the Gulf of Mexico and, I suppose, a lot of other places. Many of us were horrified and yet wondered what else could you do with them?

Now, the question arises. As these machines deteriorate generations from now, does the iron in them become bio-available also? Don't bacteria feed on iron particles?

I am noticing that, whatever scientists are looking for, including distant stars and planets, iron keeps cropping up as a center of attention. Interesting. And this article just brings up another idea.

What do some of you know about bio-available iron and the food chain?
