One of the (many) benefits of living in the UK is the comparatively small number of things that can attack you while you sleep. When i was growing up in the North East in the '60s and '70s, mosquitoes were only something you encountered on an exotic foreign holiday. Now a study shows that UK cities are becoming increasingly mosquito friendly, even to the more dangerous kind:

The cause it put down to climate change and an increased availability of habitat.
Speaking as someone who gets bitten often and badly (I react and get a 1 inch diameter welt), this is not good news :(

Changes to UK urban areas provide habitats for mosquitoes, including species known to spread malaria and West Nile virus, a study suggests. |

"Water butts collect rain from roof guttering along with vegetation, animal detritus... providing both a habitat and food resource for mosquito larvae." They explained that while individual containers were relatively small, when all the water butts in the area were combined, it represented a "large area of habitat" for breeding mosquitoes. |
