You've heard of dogshaming? Meet kidshaming...

Here's a response to cyber-bullying I hadn't seen before.

A mother apparently caught her daughter engaging in cyber-bullying and as punishment took a photograph of her holding a sign that reads:

Quote:

"My name is Hailey. I am a kind, caring, smart girl, but I make poor choices with social media. As a punishment, I am selling my iPod and will be donating the money to the charity Beat Bullying, in hopes of changing my behavior as well as bringing awareness to Bullying. Because bullying is wrong."

She then posted the photograph to Facebook, and shortly thereafter someone posted it on Reddit and it's gone viral.

I'm of two minds on this punishment. On the one hand, I tend to subscribe to the idea of "you should walk a mile in the other person's shoes" when it comes to teaching children empathy and kindness; the Golden Rule and all that. On the other hand, while attempting to teach her daughter a lesson, this mother is essentially engaging in the exact same behavior that she is punishing her daughter for in the first place. It's not exactly on the same level as most cyber-bullying, but it's in the zone, IMO. I do think taking away her technology (iPod and the like) is a correct response, but I think it might have been better to make her apologize face-to-face to whomever she was bullying online and then require her to perform some sort of community service, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen or something, for at least a month if not more. I'm glad this mother is making the effort to teach her daughter a lesson, but I think the lesson might be better taught if she approached it differently, is all.
