Westboro Baptist Church Visited My Town Today

Of course one of the major perqs of being an atheist is getting to sleep in on Sunday - but not today. Today my little town of Glendale was visited by those pathetic excuses for human beings known as the Westboro Baptist Church. They are in Southern California to protest at the Golden Globes tonight in Beverly Hills, and decided for who knows what reason to protest at four different churches in Glendale this morning.

So the wife and I dragged ourselves out of bed uncharacteristically early today to join several hundred counter-protesters in letting WBC know that they and their hate are not welcome in our town.

There were only 6 or 8 of them at different times, and we spent the morning following them from church to church: first the Lutherans, then the Methodists, then the Presbyterians, and finally the Roman Catholics. Never had so many pastors and priests welcome us onto their church grounds before! :D In addition to the atheist contingent, we also had congregants, peace vigillers, students, LGBTQ groups, and bikers. There were no incidents or problems, and our local police kept a low profile, although there were either uniformed or plain clothes officers at each location.

My impression of the WBC, now having seen them up close, is that they are nothing but a sad and pitiful bunch of publicity whores. Probably the most disturbing thing about them is that they have their children there with them holding up signs. Child abuse, IMO.
