Laptop dying? S.O.S.

Help me obi won you are my only hope. Well maybe not, but lotta sharp PC people here, so...

Background:

- Laptop (win 7, not even 2 yrs old) has been acting oddly lately, ie suddenly shutting off out of nowhere. I mean shutting immediately OFF, not a normal shut down. The good news is I'd reboot and everything would be fine.

- I thought it was due to laptop overheating as I noticed fan running when this happens, so I elevated it.

- Today it did it again. I rebooted....not fine. Took forever to reboot and after entering password and waiting 10-15 mins, I tried rebooting in safe mode.

- This worked. Whew. However I couldn't get anything more advanced than wordpad to run.

- I did the following:

-- ran chkdsk. No errors.

-- ran malwarebytes. No errors.

-- ran system restore (my only restore point was from a few days ago). Seemed to go fine, though again it took forever.

Rebooted......and again after entering password, it just spun and spun. I figured I'll let it spin and went and watched a movie. Came back and it was up and appeared fine......

...but again, either stuff doesn't run (get error), or the simpliest of programs take FOREVER to come up. It's like I was using it on 386 processing power or something.

On a hunch I tried to run my AVG analyzer. Wouldn't run. So I closed AVG down altogether, and suddenly things were snappier, ie close to normal. I immediately tried to launch Chrome, but it wouldn't run (get "not responding" error), so I ran Firefox. (edit: I do this in "safe mode" can't do much of anything in normal mode - but Firefox still hangs after briefy working)

This ran, and here I am. I'm also trying to download Avast and see if it was AVG, but I'm skeptical.

Any general thoughts/insights/ideas appreciated. I have all files I really care about backed up, except a lot of my music, but I think I can re-gain most of that back, though it'd be a royal pain.
