Industry Plays, Taxpayer Pays, West Virginia Style

Ok, FEMA is trucking in water to 300,000 people in West Virginia who can't drink their tap water because of the spill of a coal-washing chemical, and in fact one whose actual toxicity appears to have never even been carefully examined.

I see no signs that the company who spilled the stuff, or its customers, suppliers, etc, or anyone of the sort is helping out with the water crisis.

I also see little data on solubility, ease of purging biodegradability, etc, of the chemical.

And, yes, I have freakin' well looked.

So, what do we have:

1) WV takes it on the chin, again, from the coal industry

2) Nobody much notices

3) The feds pony up money to keep the people from dehydration

4) Nobody knows how to fix the mess

5) It's just running down the river into the Mississippi

6) Nobody knows what it will do there.

Is it volatile enough to evaporate? Will it dissolve in the water?

Despite the press releases, I can't find an answer to questions that obvious.

And we're all paying for this, not the company who did it.
