The other night I was in downtown Los Angeles in the middle of the night (approximately midnight) in a very quiet and dark area, and was looking up at the skyscrapers looming above me in the darkness, partially lit from within. Suddenly we both saw what appeared to be a very strange and partially transparent enormous winged form slowly gliding through the sky, about mid-level height in comparison to the buildings. It was not lit up, but was dark/shadowy and almost invisible if one wasn't paying attention. It seemed almost as though one could see through it. The wings seemed to have the shape of birds wings (feathered tips and so forth) It seemed to be flying or gliding in a straight line, and then disappeared out of view when it passed behind a building. If I were to venture a guess at its size, I would say from wing tip to wing tip it was 50 feet across.
I was with a friend who also saw it. Neither of us have any idea whatsoever of what it might have been. It was rather erie and intriguing. I've never, ever seen anything like it and am familiar with all manner of floating and flying things, having grown up in the area. Blimps, helicopters, and planes of all kinds are very common. This seemed to be very much on its own, going about its secretive business (yes, I'm projecting here...just speaking of impressions) without anyone taking notice.
There is no possibility of it having been a bird, as it was absolutely enormous in comparison to the skyscraper it passed behind.
Feel free to ask for clarification or detail. No alcohol or drugs were involved. I've been a member here since 2003 and am a skeptic through and through. This is the first time I've ever seen personally seen anything that I considered genuinely bizarre in the sense that many people who saw it would likely have considered it to be some sort of apparition/spirit/beast/alien.
Feedback or suggestions are eagerly hoped for.
ETA: I forgot to mention that it was moving very slowly through the sky. Also, it was a clear night.
