Yesterday being St.Andrew's Day got me wondering about the origins of the story that Andrew was crucified on a saltire cross.
This is often described as a "belief".
Is there any historical evidence for this?
Is there any actual info about Andrew, or what became of him?
The Scots Saltire flag is supposed to have originated with a sighting of a white saltire shaped cloud on a clear blue sky before a 9th century battle with the dreadful sassunachs, whose livestock the Scots had just appropriated.
As neither Scotland nor England existed at the time, the story is open to interpretation.
I just wondered why 9th century Brits would think St. A was executed on such a cross. Where did they get the idea? (If they did).
