Is Ridicule an Effective Strategy Against Religion?

An anecdote, When two other 7 year old boys asked me incredulously if I still believed in Santa Claus I dropped Santa that instant rather than face the spectre of ridicule. I had already seen where my dad hid the presents in the canoe and reasoned about other conflicting evidence for Santa so it was not a great leap to shed the belief. Somehow the belief lingered in spite of the overwhelming evidence against Santa. It only took a little push by the threat of ridicule to help me see the truth.

Since then, (1959) I have been a big believer in the power of ridicule. The recent news of a Festivus pole made of PBR cans and Flying Spagetti monsters next to nativity scenes in public places are examples of powerful ridicule. Ridicule from late night comedians directed at religion is very popular. I think the skeptic community should embrace ridicule and shell religion with an unending barrage. I heard the "Don't be a dick" lecture and it did dampen the ridicule some but I don't think making fun of ridiculous ideas is being a dick. Please skeptics, Have at it.
