There is an outbreak of severe childhood hepatitis in the UK. It seems to affect young children (under 6) and causes severe liver failure, at least one child has needed a hyper acute transplant.
It is not attributable to covid vaccination as this is not a vaccinated group in the UK. It does not appear to be related to Covid-19 acute infection, nor any other known viral cause of hepatitis.
There is a concern it could be a late consequence of covid-19. Omicron has just swept through this age group in the UK, so a rare late complication could fit with occurring a few weeks after the peak infection.
Search for a cause is on-going apart from the above, toxins and a previously unknown virus are being looked for. The weather has been to cold for a mosquito borne arbovirus that has been blown in from elsewhere to be the explanation.
