Is the inability to not forget bad things a psychiatric disorder?

My 94 year old mother just told me that I was repeating a story that she had heard from me several times before. I was complaining about being fired from a job and I considered the termination unjustified. An unpleasant out of the clear blue sky event. I also was in the process of describing a girl who had been shabbily treated in a similar fashion.

The events happened in 1997 and after this much time has passed she siad I should have been able to get over it.

Shes right of course but is this normal? I already go to a psychiatrist for anxity.
