Being "respected" by Putin is a perk... but what about the rest of the world?

One common factoid that Trump and other Republicans have pushed is the idea that Obama isn't "respected" by other countries. This is of course a highly questionable assertion considering that Obama has continued to have high approval ratings throughout most of Europe during his presidency.

Likewise Trump has argued that he would be better than Obama as president simply because Putin likes him. What he doesn't mention is the fact that Trump is highly unpopular throughout large parts of the world. This is especially the case with Americas close allies and friends in Europe who were appalled by the fact that someone like Trump could even be nominated as a presidential candidate let alone win the election.

This is something that Trump and republicans have tried to ignore: the loss of international prestige and image. The president of the US, and by extension the US itself, is probably going to be incredibly unpopular during his presidency.

This includes 92% of Swedes, 89% of Germans, 88% of Dutch and 85% of both the French and British. This distaste is especially strong in Sweden, where 82% have no confidence at all in him.

You might ask why does this matter? Who cares what other people think about our president? Ultimately it does matter because if the US is treated in high regard other states will allow it to get away with things that it otherwise couldn't. It would be far easier to get other countries to support it and be more willing to be friendly with it. By contrast if the US is highly unpopular it's more likely that others will take a more neutral, or even hostile, stance when it comes to disputes with other countries.
