Hard drive diagnostics

Anybody has some experience and recommendations for hard drive diagnostics tools? Preferably for Mac, but Linux would work, too.

My Mac recently decided that it's internal hard drive failed and could not be repaired. I took it to the store, got it replaced (larger Fusion drive with a SSD part -- nice!), and now have the old one here.

I have hooked it up with one of my enclosures. I was able to read it, but OS X refused to repair or write. But I could erase (format) it.

Now the question is, how reliable is that thing to be used as an external drive? I would only use it for non-essential data, but I would like to do some diagnostics.

The enclosures I have do not allow SMART. A lot of tools I could find are built on SMART, but with this enclosure don't give me enough data. I would need something that could read the whole drive and maybe mark down/take out damaged sectors.
