The Message of Christianity

Before I being I want to be clear that I'm not trying to make any arguments about "True Christians" or anything as such.

I recent event had gotten me thinking about the messages of Christianity and what people take away from it.
Now I was never a particularly good Christian boy, having figured out that both God and Santa were make believe at around the same time, and perhaps this isn't the most... appropriate place to ask for opinions, but que sera, sera.

What I usually see people talking about is the sacrifice, Jesus died for all the sins of mankind, but the teachings always seem to be secondary. When I've been to services, other than Easter, they spend time talking about the ministries and parables, but the believers often seem to care less about them than the sacrifice, but that's just the opinion I've formed. Perhaps even the ministers spend more time on the teachings because there's only so much time you can spend on the crucifixion.

So, any current or former Christians feel like weighing in?
