What if life *were* found somewhere else?

Suppose we did indeed find at some point, say for instance, simple microbial life on Mars.

What impact would that have on the scientific community? Would it validate theories of other intelligent life (maybe such as ourselves)? Could we possibly bring it back here to study it? Would that be safe?

Curious what you all think would happen upon such a discovery. I have no clue what the general reaction would be.

Thoughts?
