The central character of this play is one Sarah Noble, AKA @sarahlicity, AKA Sarplex City. Background:
Linky.
You might recall the 2015 NUSWomen conference that received much mocking and criticism. She was there.
It looks like this caught the attention of HEqual (no idea who they are, but seem to view themselves as "egalitarian" vs "gender feminist"), who did more Twitter digging, and then brought it to the attention of the LibDems.
Here are some choice samples of her work:
Now for consequences:
Linky.
Now, those who are blessed to not encounter such people on social media, you might be confused by her statements. But "Kill All Men", "Die Cis Scum", and support for "misandry" are all common phrases within certain social activist circles. There are a number of explanations given.
Some say that when an oppressed group says such hate things about the oppressive group they are venting at the oppression, and not engaging in hate speech like it would be if it occurred in reverse. Some say that if they included qualifiers like "some men, the ones who apologise for rape" then it won't challenge all the men listening to reflect on themselves. Some are just trolling the Men's Rights Activists. Personally, I think it is just a way of show in-group cred.

Noble sits on the national committees of the LGBT Liberal Democrats and the Secular & Humanist Liberal Democrats. She has also been elected to the executive committee of the National Union of Students LGBT wing, which, like the LGBT Lib Dems, has a zero-tolerance attitude towards hate speech. She is also a former team member of the Atheism Plus Block Bot, a twitter program that allows you to block predefined lists of users. ... However, Noble continues to sit on the executive committees of the Secular and Humanist Liberal Democrats, the LGBT Liberal Democrats, and Liberal Youth. These organisations have yet to comment on Nobles behaviour. |

The comments were brought to light by by HEqual, a gender egalitarian campaigning group. After being made aware of them, former Lib Dem Equalities Minister Jo Swinson was quick to condemn Nobles comments. Writing on Facebook, Swinson said the comments were completely unacceptable and in no way represent the views of Liberal Democrats. The former Minister also said that Noble has been asked to delete her tweets and apologise. No apology has yet been forthcoming. ... Nobles regional party, the Yorkshire and Humber Liberal Democrats also took action, suspending her from their executive committee pending further investigation. ... However, a spokesman from Lib Dem HQ said Sarah Nobles comments are unacceptable. The party is taking the matter seriously and has asked Sarah Noble to apologise and remove the posts. UPDATE: Gary McLelland, Chairman of the Secular and Humanist Liberal Democrats (HSLD) has commented on the story. The Executive Committee of HSLD has received a number of complaints relating to the personal tweets of one of our Committee members, Sarah Noble. The Executive Committee would like to emphasis that these tweets do not in any way represent the views of HSLD. There is currently no process in place to remove members from the Executive Committee, however after discussion with Sarah she has agreed to resign voluntarily. The Executive Committee will be meeting on May 19th where we will discuss the matter, and also review our disciplinary procedures. |
