The greatest threat to stable marriage in the United States today.

............is conservative protestantism.

Based on research work carried out at the Universities of Iowa and Texas, with the objective of discovering why the US "red states" (with their culture of religious conservatism) have such a high divorce rate. The study's originator was Jennifer Glass (UT Austin) and it's been accepted for publication in AJSoc.

The researchers studied county-level divorce statistics, along with data from an earlier study about religious affiliations. They classified as "conservative Protestants" members of those denominations that believe the Bible is the true and inerrant word of god.

The basic cause appears to be youth; specifically earlier marriages and earlier childbearing. The are known factors in increasing divorce rates, they lead to lower educational levels and lower earnings, further straining immature marriages,

But the most fascinating conclusion; even if you're not conservative protestants, merely living in an area populated with such puts you at a higher risk of getting divorced.

The study found that, county by county, for every 1% increase in the share of conservative protestants compared with mainline protestants or catholics, the divorce rate increased 0.02%

Professor Glass argues that community institutions in such areas might encourage early marriage, affecting divorce rates for everyone who lives there.

"Pharmacies might not give out emergency contraception. Schools might only teach abstinence education," Glass added. On top of that, "if you live in a marriage market where everybody marries young, you postpone marriage at your own risk. The best catches ... are going to go first."
