Help!
This is a follow-on from the "New computer time" thread, which ended up with my computer completely cured, but a wiped C drive and a new install of XP.
Everything was reasonably peachy, except I needed to recover my old Thunderbird profile with five years worth of emails on it from my external hard drive where all my files are backed up. People were extremely kind and gave me links to a page explaining how to find the profile file. I had been putting this job off because I was busy, but the other day I realised I had to do something.
I started by trying to find the new profile Thunderbird had created on my C drive when I reinstalled it, but I ran into difficulty. I got to C/Documents and Settings/ and then I couldn't see the next folder I needed.
I got the idea that maybe what I wanted was a hidden file or folder. I clicked on "properties" for the "Documents and Settings" folder, and there was a check-box saying "hidden" which was unchecked. I checked it.
Bad move.
Something happened which took about 25 seconds to happen, and my system appears to be FUBARed. All my desktop icons disappeared, except the trashcan. The start menu is only showing Thunderbird and Firefox, the "above the line" programmes. The "all programmes" menu is empty.
I tried to find the properties field for that folder and uncheck it again, but the whole directory structure appears different and I have not succeeded.
I thought I should maybe restart the computer, and did that. Worse. It's just the same, except I can't start either Firefox or Thunderbird. I get a message saying they're already running but unresponsive.
I'm using IE to type this post, but I can't get at my email at all.
I'm screwed! Can anyone help?
Rolfe.
