One of my acquaintances who is prone to alt.med woo, recently posted an article about Excitotoxins, common food additives that supposedly cause rampant neurological damage. The link was actually to a book promoting the dangers of excitotoxins by a Dr. Russell Blaylock.
Page on the dangers of Excitotoxins
I did some research, and most of what I've found blames MSG and related substances for causing serious neurological damage, and tend to have a lot of the hallmarks of alarmist woo. I was only able to find one apparently legitimate study on pubmed, and from what i can tell, it seems to affect mainly those particularly sensitive to these substances, like the elderly.
So my question is if anyone else has heard of this, and what the prevailing opinion is:
1) A serious danger for the general populace.
2) a possible problem, but overblown by self-serving scaremongers.
3) More woo nonsense.
