Looking for abstract animation freeware

I've recently come across a cache of old songs from a band I used to be in. The band is long gone and we're never going to make any money from the songs, but I still think that the music is pretty good on the whole and have been thinking about putting them up on YouTube. Just putting a still up to play them over would be okay, but I think it'd be better if I could make a video for them. But what I need to achieve that is some software on which I can create animation, but without having to pay for it because this is probably all I'd ever use it for.

I'm not looking to do 3D animation, but rather abstract 2D animation. What I mean by that is different things for different songs, but ever since we wrote the songs I've always pictured different songs in different ways like, for example, the bass line of one song being blue dots which appear on screen, the height of the dot representing the pitch, how long it stays on screen for being how long the note sounds, and for there to be a trailing (particle?) effect, as if the dot is made of sand and there's a wind blowing from one side. I could then build up visuals by having each part represented in a different way.

This means, though, that I have to be able to render several layers of animation, several layers of effects, and that I have to be able to play the sound while creating the animation in order to synch the visuals to the music.

I'm doubtful that such a programme exists, and a google search turns up plenty of freeware, but none that I can see doing what I want to achieve, but I figure that it's worth asking.
