154 people are being "monitored", with several under direct quarantine, after a husband and wife died in Bayan-Olgii province, in extreme western Mongolia.
The husband and wife were visiting Mongolia when they died at the end of last month, after the couple cooked and consumed a marmot that the husband had illegally hunted. Doctors determined bubonic plague to be the most likely cause of their deaths. Hunting and eating marmot is illegal in Mongolia precisely because the animals are known to carry the plague.
Part of authorities' emergency response included closing a border crossing with Russia in the region, leaving some tourists stranded for at least the weekend. Health officials are closely watching dozens of people known to have had contact with the couple before their deaths, in some cases quarantining them. Airline passengers from the region who landed in the capital city after the emergency was declared have also been screened.
