I'm posing this as a hypothetical with a poll to gauge the learned opinions of the forum.
Now, while I think that Trump is more of a demagogue than an out-and-out fascist, I think that even his supporters will agree that Trump is rather scornful of the way things usually get done in Washington D.C and in the country as a whole. In fact, for supporters that is part of his charm.
So, I want to imagine a scenario in which courts repeatedly rule some executive order such as on immigration, and it gets to the Supreme Court. If they rule against him, and he decides that the so-called judges on the court are imposing some politically correct judicial activist interpretation on his executive order and he doubles down on it insisting that everyone in the executive branch follow his order anyway, what happens next?
He may attempt to argue that the Supreme Court has no authority and question where this convention that presidents must abide by their rulings comes from? Would Congress move to impeach him? If so, would Trump speak over their heads and begin to rile up his followers with talk of a coup from the Washington elites? Will he manage to generate support against the traitors? Or will Congress in its collective inverterbrateness (?) realize that they have ridden the Trump Tiger in 2016 and that getting off it would cost them their electoral chances in 2018 or 2020 or whenever that may be?
Just a few thoughts...
