What’s Wrong With Coming In Second?

Stanley Black & Decker Buys Sears Craftsman Brand by Ciara Linnane

Stanley Black & Decker SWK, +1.61% said Thursday it has agreed to acquire
the Craftsman brand from Sears Holding Corp. SHLD, +0.29% in a deal with
a present value of about $900 million. The deal gives Stanley Black & Decker
the right to sell Craftsman-branded products in non-Sears retail, industrial
and online channels across the U.S. and overseas. "This agreement represents
a significant opportunity to grow the market by increasing the availability
of Craftsman products to consumers in previously underpenetrated channels,"
Stanley Black & Decker Chief Executive James Loree said in a statement.
Sears shares rose 3.5% premarket on the news, while Stanley Black and
Decker was slightly higher.
Years ago, I watched a story about a very intelligent, very shrewd, very rich man
who shorted Blockbuster Video, then Radio Shack, and currently Kmart/Sears.
And I thought, “What kind of a man would do that!” After all Sears had the popular
Kenmore And Craftsman brands, plus great locations next to popular malls.

Kmart, home of the blue light special, always ranked second from the bottom
in customer satisfaction in Consumer Reports annual ratings of retailers, just
above Walmart. I remember the last time I was in their store they played disco
music over the intercom. If you go into Walmart, practically everyday, they have
those live DJs shouting out, give me a “W”, give me an “A”, give me an “L”, and so on.

Is anyone else going to miss them?
