2017 Sea Ice Thread

The scope of this thread is like its predecessor, but now extended to both polar regions. Bear that in mind when posting here.

Last days both polar sea ice extents were at minimums since there are satellite records (1979-present days)

On January 8th:

Arctic Sea Ice extent: 12,892,000 Km2 (1,146,000 km2 below average, 124,000 km2 below last year's)
Antarctic Sea Ice extent: 4,872,000 km2 (1,153,000 km2 below average, 1,132,000 km2 below last year's)

This situation is unlikely to remain in the Antarctic banquise, but next yearly minimum (coming in some 40 to 55 days) is going to be one of the lowest on record.
