US shooting data

Good news.
Firstly the FBI will (finally) rectify the "embarrassing and ridiculous" situation and actually start keeping records of police shootings in the USA. Unfortunately the collection will still be based on "self-reported" incidents and participation will not be mandatory.

Bad news.
US government statistics on lethal accidental shootings involving children probably underestimate the problem by at least one-third, according to a joint investigation from the AP and USA Today (link).
Remember thanks to the NRA and their Republican lackeys, the CDC is forbidden to use it's resources to compile such data.
The CDC figures, based only on deaths classified as from accidental firearm discharges on death certificates, lists 74 minors died from such cases in 2014; the independent study found 113 such deaths, 53% more.
According to the study there were more than one thousand accidental shootings involving minors from 01JAN2014 to 20JUN2014. More than 320 deaths resulted
Statistically three-year-olds are the most common shooters and victims among young children, though deaths and injuries spike for children under five. The shootings most often happen at the children's homes, with handguns legally owned by adults for self-protection.
