Better ways to vote?

The writer makes the point that Trump is the Republican nominee primarily because the non-Trump votes were split as many as 15 different ways. He suggests alternatives, including "approval" voting, where voters would be able to give votes to all the candidates they like; "rank" voting, where voters would rank their preferences numerically; and "range" voting, where voters would assign points like hotel ratings.
