Lula: all about brazilian ex-president

I must begin saying that my English is far from perfect, so I may commit some mistakes.

I divided this topic in parts

Part I - backgroud

The Labour Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores [PT, as I will refer in this text]) was created in 1980, by some left wings and ex-guerrillas.

From 1964 to 1985, Brazil was living under a "dictatorship" and Lula was one of the police informers, working like a double-agent (he denies it until today). He worked some years, leadered a lot of strikes against the metalurgical industries, before he cut his finger off in order not to work (of course he denies, but even his sister reported it).

He tried office 3 times before suceeding, in 2002. He promised a, b and c, but delivered x, y and z. And that was good actually. Everyone thought he was going to make an leftist government, but it was a very economically liberal one. His second turned to the left, and it was a disaster.

Then, in 2010, he managed to get his successor elected, Dilma Rousseff, who was impeached last month, after 6 years of government.

Part II - Scandals

In 2002, a major, Celso Daniel, was killed. It was supected it was related to the labour party, but nothing no proofs were found. Last month, the re-opened the case.

In 2005, "Mensalão" appeared. This scandal consisted of diverting money from estate companys to buy allies on the congress.

Although Lula was in the center of the scheme, he scaped being investigated and impeached (president and ministers in Brazil can just be investigated with the autorization of the supreme court, guess who indicates the supreme court lawyers: the president. He had indicated 8 out of 11, and they were aproved because he bought support. It was cyclic).

So he escaped prison once.

With his charisma and populism, he managed to be elected again in 2006. As I said he did a miserable government as he inclined to the left, like the one in Venezuela.

In 2014, "Petrolão" emerged. It was a much bigger scheme. Billions were robbed from the biggest state company, Petrobras. By that time, it was the 12° biggest company in the whole world. Now it's in the hundred somthing position.

After 2 years of investigation, a lot of politicians and executives arrasted, and a president impeached, they finally got to the leader: Lula. Everybody knew it. And now, the proves are uncontestable: he got 9 million dollars in speechs he didn't gave, a triplex, a camp house and his whole family got rich.

He's being accused of justice obstruction, money laundering and corruption.

Petrolão also relates to Mensalão. The judges says it's the continuation.

Almost all his friends are in jail (literally), seven of his ministers, 2 of his parties accountant (they only had two in all the party history), some executives that were very close to him.

Two months ago, they discovered another scandal involving pension payment. It's big.

The worse is yet to come. The are investigating de BNDES scandal. It's the biggest corruption scandal of the modern history, it's tens of billions dollars. Money sent to Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Maduro (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Peru), Fidel brothers (Cuba) and much more in african countries, such as Angola.

They sent money to projects in this countries and received some money in exchange (to their accounts, ofc).

P.s: forgot that the government leader in congress, was the first senator ever to be arrested while in office. This only happened because he was recorded speaking about how he was influent to the supreme court, so they baasically had no choice.

P.s 2: as I was writing this, another scandal emerged. Lula was directly involved in the reelection of Hugo Chavez (I can't post URLs, so if you want details search "Lula Hugo Chavez reeleição VEJA)

Questions: ask below. Thanks for reading.
