Freedom? Democracy? Not so much.

Article in today's Washington Post about how much info Facebook, Twitter & Instagram are supplying to the Feds, both by warrant and unintentionally. http://ift.tt/2dVSTI4

Feds have been doing things like running Instagram feeds through facial recognition software to identify & find protestors1. Much of this has been done using a program called Geofeedia, which has been in the news here in Seattle after the city found out the police had purchased it, which they're not allowed to do without express approval, after the last few rounds of surveillance hijinks 2.

So now the companies are supposedly cutting off Geofeedia's special feeds and making them drink from the firehose like other people.

They've also been getting feeds from foreign sites like Weibo and VK, so they're not limiting it to US citizens or anything like that.

I'm sorry if this is a little disjointed, I'm frustrated and tired of this. I have to use some of these services for my job and I resent that they're not just gathering data on people currently considered criminals, but on as many people as they can, including facial recognition data, where we go, what we do, and who our friends are.

1. According to https://twitter.com/russellbrandom/s...99191964958720

2. For instance setting up a network to capture all cell phone data from the downtown core. Without letting anyone outside the PD know about it. Mayor was furious about that one. There have been several other incidents.
