Now as the Zika virus is spreading, well actually most cases seem to originate in the mosquito zone, is it time to panic?1
The WHO has declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency. Probably because they were blamed for being slow to react to the EVD epidemic.
How long until it becomes an issue in the US election season2? Will candidates announce plans to screen foreign travellers to keep out this new foreign plague? Or am I being too cynical?
OK, so far it's not much of an issue. Unlike EVD, 80% of those who contract Zika don't notice3 and the rest have a mild range of flu-like symptoms. The one serious side-effect (other than a possible link to Guillain-Barre syndrome) is the birth defect known as microcephaly where a baby is born with a smaller than usual head and serious brain under-development.
I've also started a dedicated Conspiracy Theory thread because the loons will be speculation
Should we worry? Should we panic? Should we shrug and say 'meh'? Should we do something useful and look at exterminating those bloody disease carrying mosquitoes?
1 No.
2 Not long I suspect.
3 80% of those who contract Ebola die.
