If my fellow liberals want higher-income Americans to pay more in taxes...

...then they should spend less of their energy complaining about (or worse, outright demonizing) Americans who make, say, over $100k a year (which, last I checked, isn't the top 1% - more like top 15%-20%. Oh, and there are a lot of liberals/Democratic voters in that range), and more of their energy appealing to the rational self-interest of higher-income Americans.

In other words, we liberals should argue that higher-income Americans benefit in the long run from the public services that government can (and does) provide, and that the net social benefit to all Americans (including the more affluent among us!) is worth paying somewhat more in taxes. Who wants to live in a society with crappy public services and a highly stratified class system? Unless you really don't care....which I'm really not convinced is the case for a large majority of high-income Americans.

Anyway, that's my little bit of unsolicited advice for my fellow liberals.
