If he is elected president, Christie told 11-year-old Jacob Royal on Monday while campaigning here in Iowa, he can go back to eating whatever you want to eat" at school. "The first lady has no business being involved in this, Christie told Royal during a town hall at a Village Inn, a restaurant chain that Christie said is a favorite of his to frequent when he comes to Iowa. Using the government to mandate her point of view on what people should be eating every day is none of her business, it just isnt, Christie said of Mrs. Obama. "I want people to eat healthier. Ive been trying to eat more healthy. We all should be trying to do that. It makes us better, makes us living longer, better quality of life, all the rest of it. But in the end, its your choice." "I dont care what youre eating for lunch every day. I really dont." |

One day after saying kids will be able to eat whatever they want for school lunch if he becomes president, Christie pocket vetoed a bill that would have made recess mandatory in New Jersey elementary schools. The governor's office gave no specific reason for not approving the bill, which would have required a 20-minute daily recess period for grades K-5. It instead blamed the state Legislature for passing too many bills at the end of its two-year legislative session. "Having the legislature pass more than 100 bills in such a hasty and scrambled way, praying for them to be rubber stamped, is never a good formula for effectively doing public business," Christie spokeswoman Joelle Farrell said. The pocket veto allows governors to let bills die without directly taking action on them. The Legislature does not have an opportunity to override pocket vetoes. Sen. Shirley Turner (D-Mercer), the bill's primary sponsor, said she thought the bipartisan proposal was a "no-brainer." It passed both the state Senate and Assembly without opposition. "I am sure there are many students as well as parents, teachers and administrations, as well as pediatricians, who are disappointed," Turner said. "I think the governor is out to lunch on this one." |
