To summarise: a copy of the Qur'an has been found that pre-dates Mohammed. This is based on an analysis of the parchment, not the ink, so it is still possible that the text was simply written on old parchment.

What intrigued me more, though, was the inclusion in the reporting of this story that historians believe that the Qur'an was based on stories circulating at the time, which were adapted by Mohammed and his followers for their own purposes.
This is news to me, and I was wondering if anyone else could shed some light on this?
