Here's what happened:
TSA Failed 95 Percent of Breach Tests Letting Weapons, Fake Bombs Through
So. Given that information, I have to ask: are we getting our money's worth?
I looked up some numbers. The TSA has a budget of $7.4 billion and the Dept. of Homeland Security has a $55 billion dollar budget. Beyond that, we now have to arrive at the airport an hour earlier than we used to so that we can wait in long security lines. It might be worth all that if they were finding most of these weapons and bombs, but they only found 3 out of 70 (which is actually only 4.3% if you do the math, so they were being generous in calling it a 95% failure rate).
Now, I don't think we should necessarily go back to the way things were before, but isn't there a better way to do things, which is at least as effective and doesn't inconvenience all of us so much? What is the use of these checkpoints if it's so easy to get weapons and bombs past them?

Quote:
A recent internal investigation by the Department of Homeland Security has found security failures at dozens of the nations' busiest airportsbreaches that allowed undercover investigators to smuggle weapons, fake explosives and other contraband through numerous checkpoints. In one case, an alarm sounded, but even during a pat down, the screening officer failed to detect a fake plastic explosive taped to an undercover agent's back. In all, so-called "Red Teams" of Homeland Security agents posing as passengers were able get weapons past Transportation Security Administration agents in 67 out of 70 tests a 95 percent failure rate, according to agency officials. |
